TOUR DESCRIPTION
Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic adi-kavya (first poem) which narrates the struggle of the divine prince Rama to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. During recent years more and more Hindus from India and Southeast Asia have been eager to visit Sri Lanka not only for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, but in order to honour and absorb the spirituality of those famous Ramayana sections telling about Sita’s unwavering fidelity in captivity and Hanuman’s search and Rama’s fight for her liberation. All of them are located in Lanka. Adoration of Ramayana stories motivates more and more Hindus from India and Southeast Asia to enjoy a combination of holiday and pilgrimage on our island in the heart of the Indian Ocean.
There are more than 50 major and minor sites (temples, caves, gardens, mountains and heritage sites) connected with the Ramayana, spread across Sri Lanka. Most of these are easily accessible. But there are a few that are incredibly hard to locate even with maps and detailed directions.

Any part of this itinerary can be tailor-made to fit your needs, e.g. tour length, activities, destinations.

Day 4

Nuwara Eliya – Ella

After early breakfast at the hotel, check out and proceed to Ella (Approx 1 1/2 Hrs Drive), first stop Seetha Amman Temple -Seetha Eliya. (Approx 20 Minutes Drive) The stream that runs from the hill, catered to the needs of Sitadevi during her stay at Ashoka Vatika. She is said to have bathed in this stream. There is a temple erected for Lord Rama, Sitadevi, Luxshmana and Hanuman by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that footprints akin to Lord Hamunams are found by this river -some small and some large footprints.
Thereafter Hakgala Botanical Gardens was one of the pleasure gardens of King Ravana. This is the exotic pleasure garden where King Ravana kept the depressed Sita. It was here where the heartwarming meeting took place between her and Hanuman, who brought her Rama’s ring with the news that Rama was looking for her. Part of this majestic garden still exists.
Next stop will be Divurumpola situated in Nuwara Eliya Welimada road. Divurmpola means a place where one takes an oath. Sitadevi, after being liberated from King Ravana was subjected to a test to prove her chastity by offering herself to the fire. However, she came unscathed and proved her holiness during this ritual at this place.
Next Ravana Ella Falls is a breathtaking waterfall, 1080 feet high (cascades into several falls). In Sri Lanka generally, rocky underground of the waterfalls, hard gneiss or granite, but here the material is khondalite, a kind of limestone which undergoes decay faster. This has resulted in many caves being formed near the falls. King Ravana of Ramayana legend is said to have lived in one of the caves above the waterfalls.
The Ravana Cave tunnels prove beyond doubt the architectural brilliance of King Ravana. These tunnels served as a quick means of transport through the hills and also as a secret passage. These tunnels networked to all the important cities, airport and dairy farms. A close look at these tunnels indicates that they are man-made and not natural formations. Rest of the evening is at your leisure in Ella (If any entrance fees to sites or any other fees not included in the package).

According to a Tamil legend, the temple is situated at a place where king Rama prayed to Shiva after committing the worst crime according to Hindu Dharma, namely Brahmahasti, the killing of a priest, as Ravana who had to be killed by Rama in order to liberate Sita, was of Brahmin caste. Rama stopped the Vimana vehicle at Munneshwaram because of his impression the Doshana sin was not following him at this place. So he ascended from the vimana and prayed to God Shiva asking for a remedy. Shiva advised Rama to install four lingams at Manavari, Trinco, Mannar, and Rameshwaram for this purpose.
